Mercedes-Benz and Diesel for Fuel Efficiency

Gas and Diesel and Hybrid: Oh my! With all the powerplant options available today it can be confusing to decide exactly which one is right for you. Well, never fear, because Mercedes-Benz of Santa Rosa is here to help you out of the woods and provide you with a breakdown of the three aforementioned types as well as whichnew Mercedes-Benz models they're featured in.

First up, are gasoline-powered engines. This traditional construct is by far the most common type of engine and is found in countless new and gently used car models. A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that converts chemical energy from a fuel source (gasoline) into mechanical energy which then powers the vehicle.

Next we have diesel. A diesel engine is theoretically quite similar to a gas one in the sense that they are both internal combustion engines. The main difference between the two is in their injection processes. Diesel engines utilize a direct-injection process that injects diesel fuel straight into the cylinder. Another difference is in the fuel itself; diesel engines require diesel fuel which is a heavier and oilier alternative to gasoline. In fact it is often referred to as "diesel oil," due to its consistency. Diesel fuel evaporates much more slowly than gasoline and has a higher boiling point, which means improved fuel-efficiency and lower emissions for drivers. And luckily for fans of Mercedes-Benz, the German automaker offers several diesel-powered vehicles for its popular models including the: S-Class, E-Class, M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class.

Last but not least is the hybrid engine. A hybrid differs from both a gas- and diesel-powered engine by its inclusion of an electric motor to supplement its standard gasoline one. Hybrid cars capture the typically unused heat produced by the gas-engine, convert it into electrical energy and use it charge the battery. A popular Mercedes-Benz model that features hybrid technology is the luxurious Mercedes-Benz S-Class S400 HYBRID Sedan.
